Artificial intelligence is one of the fastest-growing fields today, while also requiring close collaboration across disciplines and institutions. With the aim of connecting research teams from the Czech Academy of Sciences and Czech universities, the Matchm-AI-king seminar took place on Tuesday, 16 June, at the Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics of the Czech Technical University (CIIRC CTU).
The event was initiated by Radomír Pánek, President of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and Vladimír Mařík, Scientific Director of CIIRC CTU. Its objective was to create opportunities for establishing concrete research collaborations among teams working in artificial intelligence, showcase current research topics, and identify opportunities for joint projects.
“We need to strengthen connections between people and teams addressing similar research challenges. Czech science has tremendous potential in artificial intelligence, and collaboration is key to unlocking that potential,” said Radomír Pánek, President of the Czech Academy of Sciences, during his opening remarks.
Professor Vladimír Mařík echoed the need for closer cooperation. In his address, he emphasized that Europe is unlikely to compete with the United States or China in developing large language models. Instead, Europe’s competitive advantage lies in the intelligent deployment of AI in industry, manufacturing, research, and other application domains, where it can generate tangible economic and societal benefits.
The seminar’s name referred to the concept of a matchmaking platform. The organizers deliberately chose this metaphor because the goal was not to present institutions but to connect individual research teams and identify complementary expertise. The event emphasized interdisciplinarity, knowledge sharing, and the creation of new research partnerships.
Across three thematic sessions, researchers from the Czech Academy of Sciences, CIIRC CTU, Charles University, VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, the University of West Bohemia, Masaryk University, and other institutions presented their work. The presentations covered a broad range of topics, including computer vision, process optimization, agent-based systems built on large language models, robotics, autonomous systems, quantum computing, and AI applications in medicine, materials science, social sciences, and agriculture.
CIIRC CTU was represented, among others, by Přemysl Šůcha, who introduced research on process optimization and the emerging National Centre for Artificial Intelligence, and Patrik Beliansky, who presented advanced methods for 3D scene representation.
The Matchm-AI-king seminar demonstrated the remarkable breadth of expertise within the Czech AI research community. It also confirmed that closer collaboration among research institutions is one of the key prerequisites for launching more ambitious projects and strengthening the international competitiveness of Czech AI research.
