Distributed software testbed for the advanced technology industry

Artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and cybernetics are pivotal in the advanced industry (tagged as ‘Industry 4.0’). The Research and Innovation Centre on Advanced Industrial Production (RICAIP) is an international platform that is promoting the research capacity of the Czech Technical University in Prague and Brno University of Technology. The EU-funded RICAIP project aims to upgrade the institution from a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at national level to a CoE of European dimensions specialised in AI and industrial robotics for technologically advanced industrial production. The project will create and evolve a distributed software testbed oriented to academic and industrial requirements.
The Research and Innovation Centre on Advanced Industrial Production (RICAIP) unlocks the research and innovation capacity of research institutes from the Czech Republic: CIIRC CTU and CEITEC BUT, by establishing a strong partnership with prominent German research organizations: DFKI, and ZeMA. The RICAIP is a newly established autonomous Centre at CIIRC CTU acting as an international platform for Industry 4.0 scientific challenges and addressing current needs, gaps and demands of the industrial sector and the society.
Thanks to the RICAIP, the CIIRC CTU will be significantly upgraded from the national CoE to the European one. The RICAIP benefits from the prominent governmental support derived from the trustful Czech-German relations and high-level bilateral agreement on R&D collaboration. The RICAIP also benefits from traditionally strong industrial ties between Czech and German application sector.

The autonomy of the RICAIP Centre is supervised and guaranteed by the CIIRC Committee (officials of the State and CTU) and the RICAIP Consortium Cooperation Agreement. The special status of the RICAIP implying financial and organizational autonomy within the University is already internally formalized and approved.

The very first distributed testbed for advanced industrial production will be established as the RICAIP Industrial Testbed Core. RICAIP Czech and German partners act as starting nodes of this new and open European core facility. RICAIP Industrial Testbed Core will represent new research and experimental workplace for testing innovative solutions and processes of advanced and fully integrated multi-site industrial production.

The RICAIP represents a novel essential hub to promote strong ties with academia, industry and national and regional innovation platforms in the field of Industry 4.0. The RICAIP is a trigger for significant upgrade of CIIRC CTU scientific environment, promotes the structural change and strikes against stereotypes and lack of innovative approaches.

This project has received funding from the European Union´s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreements No. 857306.
