Objective of a virtual seminar on scheduling research and applications is to discuss both the field’s newest advancements and survey traditional areas. Seminars take place typically on every second Wednesday through three different time zones (Europe, the Middle East & AfricaNorth America & South America, and Asia, Australia & Oceania).

We are delighted to announce the first talk in our new series titled Scheduling Seminar (see https://schedulingseminar.com/ ).

It will be given by Jan Karel Lenstra (Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, Amsterdam) and David Shmoys (Cornell University, Ithaca, NY). The title is „Elements of Scheduling“.

You can follow the seminar online or offline on our Youtube channel as well:

J.K. Lenstra and D. Shmoys were invited by Michael Pinedo (New York University) to give the talk, whose abstract follows.

During the 1970’s, the area of scheduling developed from a hodge-podge of isolated results into a unified theory. Over the past decades, it has grown to a mature and lively area, which is a meeting point of operations research, mathematics and computer science, and at the same time a sound basis for the allocation of scarce resources to activities over time in many practical situations. We will sketch the early development of scheduling theory, and also discuss the integration of ideas from online analysis, stochastic models, and machine learning in response to the needs of a changing society.

The seminar is organized by Zdeněk Hanzálek (CIIRC CTU in Prague), Michael Pinedo
(New York University), Guohua Wan (Shanghai Jiao Tong).
