Abstract:
Today’s artificial intelligence systems excel at processing vast amounts of data quickly, but they lack the deeper logical reasoning essential for reliable decision-making and planning. The European OPERA project addresses this gap by developing General Purpose AI (GPAI) that seamlessly combines fast pattern recognition with analytical capabilities. This approach enables autonomous systems to adapt to unexpected situations, detect anomalies, and make safe, explainable decisions in full compliance with EU AI regulations.
The project will deliver a modular set of open-source software tools available through the European AI-on-Demand platform. The impact of this technology will be validated in real-world environments across three key sectors: smart manufacturing, advanced robotics, and maritime transport. Through this work, OPERA strengthens Europe’s technological autonomy while boosting productivity, sustainability, and energy efficiency in industry.
