Pavlína Koutecká, a graduate of the Open Informatics program (FEL CTU) proposed, under the guidance of associate professor Přemysl Šůcha, head of the optimization group at CIIRC CTU, who also works as a teacher at the department of control technology FEL CTU, the possibility of better planning of surgical procedures in hospitals so that optimal utilization of doctors, theaters and priority resolution of the most important surgical procedures for patients.

Her solution, which she developed at the same time as a researcher in the optimization group at the CIIRC CTU, won a silver medal in the IT SPY 2023 competition. Using the branch-and-price method accelerated by machine learning, its solution will bring a significant saving of time and resources.

The work entitled „Planning of surgical procedures using the branch-and-price method accelerated with the help of machine learning“ was selected this year from almost 1,200 projects that were defended at Czech and Slovak universities last academic year. This year’s edition was dominated by learning algorithms, i.e. the use of artificial intelligence.

IT SPY (IT Student Project of the Year) is an elite official competition for the best diploma thesis in the field of informatics and information technology. On the professional side, the competition is sponsored by the Czech and Slovak sections of the worldwide professional organization ACM. The goal of the competition is to support students in their studies and help them apply this effort and the results in practice. IT SPY 2023 is already the fourteenth year of this competition. 20 Czech and Slovak universities and up to 1,500 defended theses participate in the competition every year. The competition is organized by leading Czech and Slovak universities together with Profinit.
