How to produce innovative products in a flexible and effective way?
Get inspired by the digital manufacturing in Testbed for Industry 4.0 at CIIRC CTU
Manufacturers keep asking a question more and more often how to react flexibly to a changing demand on products and how to satisfy individual customer needs effectively. It is not only about the variety of the product portfolio or about shortening the time to market of new products but also about new business models and about seeking new ways of creating added value.
Industry 4.0 puts forward the vision of smart factories – fully integrated, automated and continuously optimized environment based on the principle of interconnected cyber-physical systems.
Investments into the development and implementation of innovative solutions will be represented by complex projects that ensure the sustainability and competitiveness of the Czech industry. Device manufacturers, software suppliers and industrial companies need a platform which allows them to develop, evaluate and test compatible solutions in production-like environment with interaction with the latest technologies.
In the new building of Czech Institute of Informatics, Cybernetics and Robotics at CTU in Prague a new Testbed for Industry 4.0. Interested people for automated and digital production can test new solutions for smart factories in Testbed according to the principles of Industry 4.0. They can check the compatibility, functionality and effectivity, they can simulate and optimize production and relevant business processes.

Research Infrastructure of European Importance
The Testbed for Industry 4.0 at CIIRC CTU as an integral part of RICAIP Centre of Excellence and as a research and experimental workplace is the core asset for the exploitation of results of multiple research projects. The Testbed is a unique research facility for the development and testing of innovative solutions for advanced and fully integrated industrial production and processes for smart factories. In recent years, modern equipment has been purchased thanks to the financial resources from EU and Czech government within projects:
RICAIP Project – funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020: No. 857306, and from the ESIF OP RDE: CZ.02.1.01/0.0/0.0/17_043/0010085.
Cluster 4.0 Project – funding from the ESIF OP RDE: No. EF16_026/0008432
The Testbed combines different technologies as additive manufacturing, machining, robotic manipulation, intelligent conveyor systems, human-robot cooperation, automated warehousing and others. Thanks to the flexible interconnection of universal production tools and a sophisticated control system, the same resources can be used to execute different operations, which are scheduled optimally as needed.
The Testbed for Industry 4.0 is based on a multi-agent platform for distributed manufacturing systems. The multi-agent functionality serves in the scope of the local Testbed of CIIRC CTU but is capable to be extended to other lines and testbeds, utilizing the common data, digital, and security platform layers.
Try out a digital production
The basis of Testbed is a flexible production line for concurrent production of several product types in a series of variants. It combines different technologies like additive manufacturing, machining, robotic manipulation, intelligent conveyor systems, human-robot cooperation, automated warehousing and others. Thanks to the flexible interconnection of universal production tools and a sophisticated control system the same resources can be used to execute different operations, which are scheduled optimally as needed.
